In what can only be called a Hail Mary vote, Tarzan of the Apes, Burroughs great bread n’ butter title received a single vote before the round closed at midnight to take the win from A Princess of Mars. Princess had already beaten one Tarzan title (the Untamed), and so the tight race between the author’s two earliest titles was not unexpected.
This sets up a battle between Tarzan and The Land That Time Forgot. Land has faced some pretty strong challengers in the previous rounds, but has won its brackets without much suspense. In fact, it is the debate over this title’s unique power and strength to attract readers over the ages that prompted ERB March “Title” Madness.
Tarzan of the Apes is a classic title that has burned itself into the global vocabulary. During our tournament, it edged out The Gods of Mars (no slouch in the title department) in the final hours of voting in the first round, and one fan believed in its strength enough to give it their vote for the win in the second.
The real question is can Tarzan of the Apes defeat The Land That Time Forgot? Vegas odds have Land winning by 4 (that’s a joke).
Meanwhile, our other bracket features two formidable Barsoom powerhouses, namely The Chessmen of Mars and The Fighting Man of Mars. Both have shown impressive dominance in their previous matches, having overcome relatively weaker opponents with ease.
However, while Fighting Man has secured more votes in the previous rounds, Chessman's title invokes a sense of sophistication and elegance, hinting at a battle of strategic wits and cunning. It is one of the great titles in the ERB pantheon.
Overall, the Final Four is set to be a thrilling and captivating spectacle, with each contender bringing their unique strengths to the table. It remains to be seen who will emerge victorious, but one thing is certain: this tournament has been one for the ages, and this Final Four battle is sure to be unforgettable.
Voting starts – Tuesday, March 12 – 8:00 a.m.
